COUNT POINTS IN POLYGONS TOOL
Input: a point layer and a polygon layer
Output: an attribute is added to the polygon layer
Features:

  • for each polygon, the number of points that occur inside it are counted and the value is written to the polygon attribute table
  • this tool works for complex polygons (donuts, etc)
  • this tool works with overlapping polygons (e.g. home ranges)
  • the user can specify to process only the selected polygons (if any are selected)

Limitations:

  • if the field name already exists, it is updated

Getting started. A point and polygon layer must be loaded into ArcMap in order to use this tool. If your point layer is an event theme and you are experiencing problems, try making it a shapefile and trying again (right click on the event theme in the Table of Contents, select Data, then Export Data).
